Essential oils are extremely potent and must be diluted with a carrier oil or cream when used on the skin, especially for babies.
According to National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA), for babies older than 3 months a safe dilution ratio of .5 to 1 percent should be followed.
In fact, since babies have more sensitive skin than adults, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians notes that essential oils should not be used at all on infants under 3 months old.
Thus, even when diluted, essential oils may cause skin irritation and sun sensitivity. So it’s suggested that a patch test (sometimes called a “spot test”) be performed on the skin, with each new oil introduced. You may also try these ways to pamper your babies with these essential oils:

- Warm a small amount of the diluted oil by rubbing it between your hands.
- Gently rub the oil into the baby’s skin, starting on their legs. Use just enough pressure to move the skin gently.
- To massage the baby’s chest and belly, spread your hands out towards the sides of the baby as if flattening the pages of a book. Use your fingers to make small circles.
